The Public Advocate is a citywide elected position who is first in line to succeed the mayor. They serve as a direct link between the electorate and city government. The Public Advocate serves four-year terms and can hold up to two terms. The current Public Advocate is Jumaane Williams.

New York’s “Watchdog”

The Public Advocate serves the citizens of New York and advocates on their behalf to city government. The provide oversight for city agencies, investigate citizen complaints against city agencies, and create reports on issues facing the city. Anyone from the public who has a grievance or complaint against the city can issue an inquiry with the office.

Appointments

The Public Advocate appoints the New York City Independent Budget Office Director, whose responsibility is to provide nonpartisan information about the city budget and tax revenues. The Public Advocate also appoints members to several boards around the city.

Legislation

Although the Public Advocate cannot vote in City Council, they have the right to introduce and co-sponsor legislation in City Council.
