The Mayor is the executive branch of New York City government. The Mayor’s office administers all city services, public property, police and fire protection, most public agencies, and enforces all city and state laws within New York City. The Mayor has jurisdiction over all five boroughs of New York City. The Mayor communicates between federal, state, local, and tribal governments. The current Mayor is Bill De Blasio, and this is his final term. The election for Mayor is November 2nd, 2021.

the budget

One of the biggest responsibilities of the Mayor is to begin the budget process for the city. The Mayor creates a preliminary budget that goes to City Council for a vote. Every year between January and July, the Mayor’s Office and City Council debate for the budget. New York City has the largest municipal budget in the United States at $92 billion dollars a year! veto power

Similar to the President of the United States, the Mayor has power to veto legislation City Council passes. This veto power can be overrode if two thirds of City Council vote to pass.

appointments

One of the biggest duties of the Mayor is to appoint commissioners to over 40 agencies. This means that the Mayor has power over who controls many of the issues that happen around the city. Some of the largest include:

  • New York City Police Commissioner

  • New York City Fire Commissioner

  • New York City Criminal Court judges

  • New York City Marshals

  • New York City Schools Chancellor

  • New York City Mayor's Office of Management and Budget

  • Commissioner of Health of the City of New York
