 The Borough President is an elected office in each of the five boroughs (Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Manhattan). Each Borough President serves four-year terms for up to two terms. The current Borough Presidents are:

  • Ruben Diaz, Jr (Bronx)

  • Eric Adams (Brooklyn)

  • Gale Brewer (Manhattan)

  • Donovan Richards (Queens)

  • James Oddo (Staten Island)

Advocate

Borough Presidents advocate on behalf of the borough to the Mayor, City Council, New York State Government, public corporations, and private businesses. They advise the city government on land-use items in their borough, and they advocate the needs for the annual budget.

Board of Estimates

Each Borough President sits on the Board of Estimates, which are responsible for numerous areas of municipal policy decisions, like city budget, land-use, contracts, franchises, and water rates.

Legislation

The Borough President can spearhead legislation in City Council, but they cannot vote. Borough Presidents can support or oppose legislation proposed by other city council officials.

Appointments

The Borough President appoints:

  • elected officials in city government

  • Community Board members

  • One member to the NYC Planning Commission

  • Two members to the NYC Panel for Educational Policy
